Martha Cooper’s 25th Anniversary Edition of Subway Art and Going Postal Book Signing
First Ever Chicago Sticker Exchange – All Stickers $5
and Making Deals Zine Premiere
Time: Friday, May 1st 6-10 PM, Chicago

For the first time in her thirty year career, famed street photojournalist Martha Cooper will be coming to Chicago to release the highly anticipated 25th anniversary edition of Subway Art published by Chronicle Books. The new edition of Subway Art features new photos and text and comes in a beautiful large-scale format. Going Postal, Cooper’s new book about the burgeoning postal sticker art scene in New York will also be available. Both books will soon become street art and graffiti staples. MR. THOR will be creating an art installation for the space.

To coincide with the Going Postal book release, Upset, a collective of artists from Chicago and New York, presents a handmade sticker art sale featuring work from many of the artists in Cooper’s postal sticker art book. Over 30 artists from New York and Chicago are involved in the sale. All stickers sell for only $5 and artists are also encouraged to bring their work and exchange stickers with other artists. Featured artists include Blanco, C-Damage, Faust, Overconsume, Stomach, and more.

The Making Deals zine premiere takes place at the Novem Studios store, only a few doors down from the Martha Cooper event. The New York City based zine compiles images and interviews with people creator Frank Serpico finds personally interesting including graffiti, drug dealing, 70s cinema and sports, and urban mayhem with a focus on New York and Chicago—the artist’s hometown. Making Deals Issue One is printed in a limited edition of 100 and features an interview with Chicago graffiti legend Sivel. For the premiere, Serpico, who is also co-founder of Upset, will have illustrations and paintings available for sale.

Description: In the Graffiti subculture, practitioners are known as “writers” because graffiti is about writing your name on as many surfaces as possible. Although many writers elevate their art form to the level of creating huge and beautiful murals, they all began their journey as an artist by first learning to write and perfect their name. The Sharpie marker is often the first tool a writer acquires in his lifelong journey to hone his craft and in becoming an artist.

The Sharpie Show, an exhibition curated by renown graffiti artist Man One, featuring original pieces created using Sharpies by some of the best known graffiti artists in the country (and beyond). Aside from graffiti artists, work by tattoo artists and known illustrators; Lalo Alcaraz and Overton Loyd will be on display. From stylized hand signatures, to throw ups, piecebooks, stickers, and any other possible object that can be marked upon, this exhibit will demonstrate the level of creativity that can be achieved between an artist and his/her most basic tool – The Sharpie.

Man One is a Los Angeles based Latino urban graffiti artist whose professional career has spanned over 15 years with community projects, exhibitions, videos, festivals and corporate commissions worldwide. “Art keeps me alive and it helps me communicate globally about certain issues with massive amounts of people. Graffiti art is a legitimate expression in color, style and purpose. I find inspiration often when I can help the youth of America find a purpose in lieu of their damaging environments,” says Man One.
